Croesus (KREE-sus). Historical king of proverbial riches. His ancient realm lies within present-day Turkey. Croesus derived his wealth from gold deposits in the river Pactolus, said to have been left there when another king, a mythological one, washed away the Midas touch (the power to turn whatever one touched into gold). |
If it weren't a jumbling of time periods and fact with fiction, one could say that the mythological king who possessed the "Midas touch" was as rich as Croesus. Cartoon by Mark Fiore. |
